Warning Photomontage Final

The excercise was this: Your montage should demonstrate an understanding of the narrative affect of combining images.  Duration 90 seconds to 120 seconds.

Using Final Cut Pro, I put together my photomontage which lasts around 1min 53secs. My pictures were taken on a day trip to Bristol and the song I have used is Warning by Green Day.

I found it difficult to decide which transitions I wanted to use, as I thought simply using straight cuts between photos would look rather amateur. Also with using a song that is quite well known I didn't want it to look too tacky.

This is my final piece uploaded to Vimeo, comments welcome =]

  1. Hello!

I really liked your idea of mixing a soundtrack to a theme, I thought that was a very strong idea.

Also, your use of signs was quite varied, which was another good point as I was presented with warning signs that I had not previously taken into account. I guess we just passively take these in...

The positioning of some of your photography was really strong, however, I think it could have been improved if your photography was more varied. For example, by not centering the signs too much, maybe to have them offset and to fit into one of the 'thirds'.

Another way I think your piece could have been improved is with your editing.
If you experimented with pace a little more and varied the shots to maybe include more than one photograph in a frame or speed the pace of your video, it would have enhanced your themes and would have fitted in much better with the soundtrack.

Overall, I really like your ideas and the way that you've gone about this piece, it really captures a sense of space and time and presents us with possibly overlooked restrictions we as humans have.

    Nice one :)

  2. Really interesting idea. Thought provoking, makes you realise how inundated we are every day with signs and directions telling us what to do and how to act - and how we've gotten so used to it that we don't even notice them anymore. Makes you wonder if they really are entirely for our benefit and necessary for our well being, or are just another way for authorities to exert their control?

I liked the way it was done, the diversity of the images of signs and warnings, many of which we don't notice at all anymore seeing as we've become so used to it and ones that wouldn't normally spring to mind, such as the one of the padlock. I also likes the angles and lighting of some of the photographs like the CCTV one or the one where the only colour in a black and white photograph is the red of the sign, emphasizing the warning itself.

One thing that could have added to it would have been varying the timing and pace of the editing a bit more, perhaps adding them in faster succession as the song progressed to keep the attention of the viewer captured.

Overall, I thought it was well done, thought provoking and went well with the music used. Good job!
